Nikolay Voutchkov, PE, BCEE, is with Water Globe Consulting, LLC where he provides independent technical advisory services in the desalination field to public utilities and private consulting companies and investors in the U.S.A. and abroad. With more than 30 years of professional experience, 14 as a Board Certified Environmental Engineer, Mr. Voutchkov has completed a wide range of engineering, planning, and applied research projects in the field of desalination, conventional water supply, wastewater treatment, and reuse. Between 1998 and 2009, he was a Chief Technology Officer for Poseidon Resources, a private company specializing in the development of large water infrastructure/desalination projects. Mr. Voutchkov is the author of Desalination Engineering: Planning and Design.

Very good and practical operation manual

Due to our geographical location and climate, in Spain we suffer severe water scarcity and an irregular, unpredictable climate that even reaches desertification in some areas. Therefore we have been dealing water availability with coordinated actions covering surface and subsurface water resources management, water sanitation, water treatment, desalination and reuse.

That means to invest heavily in hydraulic infrastructures which are meant to ensure the necessary water resources, regardless of the weather conditions. Over the last years, desalination has been one of our main investment programmers (12 RO plants with more than 1.000.000 cubic meters per day) as this technology has notably increased its efficiency and competitiveness thanks to technological improvements incorporated within the process and to the international leadership of the Spanish companies in the sector.

But nothing of this would be possible without a sound plant operation knowledge oriented to fulfill our business objectives: Satisfy users' water needs; Maximize operations' efficiency and quality; Prevent the environmental impact of our actions; Contribute to economic growth and environmental improvement of the regions where we operate.

From our experience the book has been a great surprise as it includes comprehensive explanations about all operational aspects of desalination plants, from the first step to the last, covering in one book all the process involved. They are wide, accurate and clear, very easy to read and understand.

The book has a great approach as an Operations and Maintenance Manual, as it is focused on everyday problems. It goes straight to the point avoiding extreme technical or analytical boring expositions. Particularly helpful are the data and ideas shown through the troubleshooting chapters at the end of every topic, including thumb rules and ratios to guide operations in order to avoid problems.

As a suggestion for the more than likely future editions -or future manuals-, we think that main future challenges for desalination plant operation will be focused on minimize costs by improving energy consumption efficiency -at least in countries with high energy costs- and operations oriented to avoid any environmental impact.

The book provides practical guidance that is useful for day-to-day plant operation and facility optimization, and presents the information in a manner that is clear and easy to follow and implement. The book is not limited to any particular aspect of desalination plant operations, but rather covers all key aspects and encompasses treatment facilities most commonly used in desalination plants worldwide - from intake and pretreatment to reverse osmosis separation and post-treatment of the product water.
There are a number of books on the market addressing the planning and design of desalination facilities, but this book is unique. It is a one-of-a-kind compendium of the state-of-the-art in desalination plant operation and maintenance, and is sure to become an invaluable source of information for those involved in the desalination industry.

This volume is a must-have for any desalination or reverse osmosis (RO) plant.

From my perspective as Operations Manager of a large scale desalination plant, this eagerly awaited reference text is an important tool for industry and of practical use in all technical aspects of operational activities, from training to process troubleshooting and equipment maintenance. It encompasses the full range of variability in RO plant design and therefore has applicability across industry while complementing its predecessor "Desalination Engineering: Planning and Design".

Voutchkov continues to be a key contributor on an international scale to the dissemination of information in the water industry and in particular the areas of RO and desalination.

A sample Dark DDoSer botnet was constructed and used to launch a distributed denial of service attack. The characteristics of the distributed denial of service attacks were used as the independent variables in a quasi-experiment where network traffic was monitored with Snort to detect DDoS packets. The dependent variable for the experiment was false positive alerts for the DDoS packets. The findings showed that the characteristics of a distributed denial of service attack can be used to pro-actively detect botnets through egress monitoring.

Well written and thought provoking book. Dr Hyslip explains in detail the intricacies of botnet detection. A must read for anyone looking for a more in depth understanding of denial of service attacks.

Interesting approach to defeating Botnets

Botnets are serious problem and threat to the Internet. Dr Hyslip provides an interesting proactive approach to detecting botnets and ultimately defeating them. The introduction is very detailed and provides an outstanding history of botnets as they evolved from a tool for system administrators to the crime of choice for hackers. In addition to presenting his approach for fingerprinting botnets, Dr. Hyslip also provides a very thorough review of past botnet detection techniques, which was very interesting to read. The book concludes with the results of Dr. Hyslip’s experiment that showed his proactive technique is effective and will help with the battle against botnets. Any infosec professional will appreciate the detailed analysis of past and current botnet techniques, and students can use the book as good reference for research into botnets and ddos attacks. If you are none technical reader, the book is still of value, as the introduction is a great overview of how botnets work and why they are such a concern.

Very interesting read!

I really enjoy books on computer networking and protection, so I couldn’t wait to get started when I found this book. The tables and charts were clear and detailed, the writing was educational and easy to read, the formatting was well organized, and sources were cited perfectly.

This book is very helpful in detecting botnets and preventing malware infections. The history of the development in this field and all the data is very interesting as well. I highly recommend this book!

Lost and Found

Lost and Found is the first book in K.F. Breene's Growing Pain series. The book is not a standalone book and does not end with a HEA but a see the next book, etc. I am not a huge fan of cliffhangers so I was disappointed by the ending. That being said the book was entertaining enough to keep me interested till the end. I do love reading about a flawed hero but I did definitely want to smack this womanizing hero several times. Krista was an awesome character, too bad the hero is too stupid to see that. So if you like flawed heroes and don't mind lack of a HEA then I recommend this book.

To be fair, I did not realize this was a continuing series when I started it. It ends abruptly, which is okay - I suppose - if you're planning to continue w/ the series. I am not. Nothing really happens in this story, altho there are a few redeeming scenes that are interesting. But what happens at the end completely ruined it for me. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just say this story was not for me. :(

LOST and Found left me LOST!

I found myself preserving to the end thinking it would come together and make sense. It didn't. The story started off with the main character, Krista, being horribly abused by her boyfriend. Somehow, never explained, she starts her new life in another state, confidently starting in a new job. The rest of this story jumps around. She is temporarily assigned to a new job working for womanizer Sean who has a thing for her. The book described Sean's sexual exploits with other women, and Krista's problems avoiding him, getting drunk with her obnoxious friends, speed dating, etc., etc., etc. There is a sequel available. I won't be reading it.

memories of the past

A few months ago, I was visiting a friend in Ferrara and while walking through the streets of the town I was reminded of the Finzi Continis' sad story.
Going by the wall surrounding the house where they used to live, I went back to the times of their youth(the 30s and 40s)and I could nearly hear their happy voices, Alberto, Micol and their friends playing tennis in the big garden, Alberto on his wheeling chair watching the others play.
Ghosts of a time past, happy young people unware of what was waiting for them just round one of the corners of their lives.
I read the the book a few years ago and I was impressed by the sad, but never tragic style of the author Giorgio Bassani.
The story is a recollection of the life of a Jewish family from Ferrara before and during the Nazi-fascist persecutions of world war two.
The story of the one-sided love of the author for Micol Finzi Contini the Jewish girl who seems to foresee her destiny and refuses to return his love. She seems to know about her deportation to a concentration camp somewhere in Germany where would be lost any trace of her and her family.
She is doomed and she knows it.
Mr. Bassani tells his children this story while visiting an Etruscan necropolis, it is his story too and sadly points out that there are no tombs where to grieve and pray for Micol and her family, there is only their memory left in the hearts of those who loved them

Barbara Lane, Ph.D., is a clinical hypnotherapist and the author of two other books on past lives, Echoes from Medieval Halls and 16 Clues to Your Past Lives. Interesting views!

Barbara Lane has taken several people that are for the most part reenactors or people absolutely hooked on the Civil War era and basically gave them a past life reading through hypnosis. Barbara Lane writes about each person she has regressed and also writes about their history, how they became interested in the Civil War and what they gained from being regressed or views about themselves. Many times they were shocked, or non-believers about the concept of being hypnotically regressed to go back to a past life and reveal situations of a life time that involved the Civil War era. How their lives in another life time were discussed to show how their lives are effected this time around. It was all very interesting. Reenactors and people interested in reincarnation would love this book as it offers further insight in to strange, but yet unusually accurate ideas about past lives. Who knows, if you love the Civil War, perhaps you were alive back then? Read this book to discover your similarities!

Great if you like a focus on statistics...

I was disappointed to find the stories of Civil War reinactors regressed to Civil War lives to be a very small part of this book. The majority of this book focuses on statistics of these cases and others and the statistics are hashed and rehashed. This book reads like a thesis, which it was in fact, originally intended to be and I was hard pressed to finish it.

Mrs. Lane told the story so realistically that I could almost feel as if I were right there in the Civil War period. It brought it to life for me. I would definitely like to read more by this author!
