easy ways to make complex BPEL

The immediate short term goal of this book is for you to pass its corresponding Oracle SOA exam. But you can rise above this, by using it to learn how Oracle has continued to support and extend Service Oriented Architecture far beyond its roots of 10 years ago.

Then, SOA and Business Process Execution Logic [BPEL] were first touted as enabling the making of Web Services. A loosely coupled and distributed framework of services. But there were little actual useful implementations. Now, through this book, you can see and benefit from the massive effort put in by Oracle to instantiate those in java and XML. There are many XML snippets, often for WSDL (Web Services Description Language), that describe examples of messages passed from one Web Service to another.

One neat feature of the book is the many figures that show graphically how to make a BPEL process. The modular building block nature of this is how in practice many of you will make an original process. There is a very intuitive feel to just taking the output of a single process, which might be a Web Service all its own, and hooking that into the input of another process. This subsumes much (all?) of the complexity in outputting a specifically XML formatted message and in the receiving process having to parse that message.

For some readers who just might hail from electric engineering backgrounds - There is a direct analogy between the above and how you can use other software packages (like pSpice or L-edit) to make a complex electrical circuit or a chip design out of simpler existing designs.

Ideal for attempting SOA Certification but also a good overview of SOA Suite

Passing any certification exam not only requires practical experience of the product but a clear understanding of what is required
to pass the exam. As someone with a lot of practical experience of SOA Suite I found this a very useful guide to the certification exam and what is expected. The content is neatly broken down into appropriate topics and each is explained in sufficient, but not too much, detail.

If you are planning to attempt the certification exam, I would say a book like this is a must. If not, this is still a very good introduction to SOA Suite.

Not comprehensive enough for certification

I purchased this book with the intention of getting sufficient knowledge to clear the certification exam. But this book is not comprehensive enough to cover all the topics in sufficient detail.

Cons:
1) The author has simply copied and pasted Diagrams, XML files and exam objectives throughout the book, while writing only a few lines of text on his own that would barely fill a page for each chapter.

2) No proofreading - I found plenty of grammatical and spelling mistakes throughout this book. If that's not enough, then take a look at the other four books on SOA by this same author, namely "Kathiravan Udayakumar", and all those four books also have the same mistakes as I later found out.

3) Seems like this author is trying to sell several copies of books covering various branches in SOA but doesn't have the time to read and review the books or to write them properly with sufficient and useful information, while being in a hurry to make money to launch these books on amazon (as of Jan 2013 these books had been launched recently). This is appalling to say the least.

Much of the information that was listed in this book consisted of pure data entry on the part of a non-English speaking individual and with several repetitions of the same line of text to fill up the book.

I would not recommend this book to anyone.

Just what I needed

I received this book as a gift. I'm three-quarters of the way through it so far . . . and I have to say reading it is like a wake-up call.

Like most people, I've been forced to deal with reinvention in my own life, and it has not always been easy. In this book, the author manages to present reinvention under a new light and shows how (even if it can be tough) it's a natural part of life and a source of opportunities. He links reinvention with the creative process. This concept was a big eye-opener for me.

He sets the tone in the opening pages when he says: "If you cultivate within yourself the capacity to relearn, reinvent, and retry things intelligently, you will possess something unique that can never be taken away." Then he shows you how to achieve just that. The author guides you through your own reinvention journey trough a series of workshops with many exercises.

The book mixes inspiration and practical advice/strategies. The author is part coach, part taskmaster . . . He's focused, caring and sometimes gives some tough love.

My only reservation so far is that the book is over 300+ pages, -- there's a lot to take in because there are many exercises and also videos to watch.

As I'm reading this it has been a huge source of inspiration. This book is about how to live your best life. I know it's a guide I'll refer back to in the future. I recommend this book for people who want to take their lives to new heights and who are also committed to work hard to achieve their goals. As the author writes: "reDesign: reCreate is about lifelong growth." Very true indeed.

A fantastic guide

I often struggle with books of this nature because I find that they rarely give concrete, actionable means by which one can achieve the goals that drove them to purchase the book in the first place. It also seems that they often offer `quick-fixes' or `silver bullets', both of which are unrealistic and set the reader up for, let's just say it, failure.

One of the numerous things I appreciate about Wolf's book is that he has avoided both of these traps. This book is practical, accessible and realistic. He makes no bones about the work that the reader will have to do in order to advance along their personal path, and he offers a clear and valuable guide. Have I accomplished what I intended to by picking up this book? Not yet. But that's not the point. The point is that I feel that I have a map that is relevant, meaningful and useful to me, especially in today's more chaotic, less certain world.

On top of all of that, it's a fun read, and the bonus videos are engaging and helpful (don't skip them!). I'd recommend this book for just about anyone who is trying to figure out how to maneuver in this new world we are all finding ourselves in. Admit it, that's you.

Valuable

I realize the difficulty of writing a book like this - one that offers anecdotal inspiration, one that provides advice for a potentially limitless "discipline", one that wants to be both your counselor and friend - and for that, I have to commend Wolf for not only assuming this challenge but also creating a book that has real value.

He clearly lays out the premise of his workshop and systematically guides the reader to build the armature for success. While he focuses on the Creative, I think what's impressive is that the lessons included in the book are more fundamental than that. They border on the common sense, which, I want to emphasize, is a very difficult sense to learn and to teach. And Wolf does this well. He uses fun stories, fictional disasters, and true successes to point out the pros and cons of various thought practices. He also is able to write about the balance between reality and fantasy in a way that is very useful. More importantly, he promotes practices that are helpful in all situations: he encourages thinking beyond oneself, taking initiative, believing in process, and valuing creativity.

So while I think the target audience includes creative professionals (and non-professionals), I think the larger lessons in "reDESIGN reCREATE" are appropriate for everyone. It's a nice read that's perfect for the subway, the bed, the beach, or the library.

About the Author
Rachel Meyer is a language school owner, Mandarin teacher, textbook author and former Chinese television actress. She is an enthusiastic language learner with fluency in Mandarin, Spanish and French. She spends her days running her language schools in New York, San Francisco and Menlo Park, teaching Chinese and Spanish, and organizing her popular language groups in San Francisco.  Her schools have been recognized by New York Magazine and The San Francisco Chronicle as "Best of New York" and "Best of the Bay Area", respectively.  Her life-long love of learning Mandarin inspired her to write Chit-Chat Chinese (Mandarin textbook and workbook) and encapsulates her approach to teaching and learning Mandarin.

Outstanding, finally someone gets it right.

For several years I have been becoming more sceptical about all the acclaimed wonders of Mandarin grammar books available through online sellers. The acquisition of this book totals 38 books I now have on the nebulous topic of "Chinese" language. This book is a reflection of the toils of a learner who somehow put it all together to acquire fluency. Whereas many Chinese born authors write a rehash of the troubled education system in their home country, Rachel Meyer from America nails it in her first book.

There are many things that many authors do not consider when writing. Readability is the most overlooked. The author makes great use of complementing colours and large readable fonts. Anyone who has read "Chinese through Tone and Colour" knows the headache of poor layout. There is generous spacing, no clustering and it is easy to relax and read without strain.

Content of course makes the book. This book is a systematic and gradual progression of the most useful characters compiling the most useful grammatical constructions. Characters are introduced with pronunciation, Hanyu Pinyin, meaning and then simple useful sentences. There is no searching all over the book to chase the components of each character. Repetition is gently integrated without the psychosis of Pimsleur. The integration of pronouns, verbs, proper nouns, adverbs, and nouns is so well balanced that useful sentences compile at a comforting rate.

The author effectively inserts anecdotes, cultural points, idioms and humour.

As an author, I know that indexes can take as long to write as the book. Rachel Meyer indexes English-Pinyin-character and Pinyin-English-character. This makes the utility of the book so much more useful and creates a dictionary of all terms and character in the book.

Every facet of what you need is in this book, text book, definitions, work book, dictionary, cultural tips, it is simply awesome.

As this book is "Level 1", I hope "Level 2" is in the works.

Language books are grossly over represented in used book stores and garage sales, this is not a reflection of people's lack of interest in learning languages but a reflection of horrid writing and good marketing. I highly recommend this book for both the beginner and the student who wants to consolidate their independent learning or their poorly taught course work.

Terrific book for introductory Chinese

I was a Chinese minor in college. The only thing I remember now thirty years later is that the textbooks from that era were really, really bad. I am now studying Chinese in an evening class, and we use Chit-Chat Chinese as a textbook. Wow! What a difference. Chit-Chat Chinese is about the most nearly perfect introductory textbook for a foreign language that I have ever seen. It's heavily oriented toward Americans who wish to learn Chinese: its sample sentences contains cartoons of George Clooney, Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and even Mini Me ("Mini Me ai bu ai," or "Is Mini Me short?") Very splashy and fun, but also very thorough on Chinese phonology and grammar, and all written from the perspective of someone who struggled to learn Chinese and is now freely sharing the tricks, shortcuts, and explanations that make the most sense to English-speaking people. Even comes with a CD. I can't recommend this book highly enough. Xiexie, Rachel Meyer!

Disappointed

This book has great audio resources, but seems a bit rushed and unfinished. The English segments are well edited but my teacher frequently would have us correct the Chinese segments. The website has all of the audio elements uploaded but the website pretty much ends there with lots of "coming soon" messages from 2013. Each lesson begins with a section on Pinyin pronunciation, but many of the key sound differences were introduced way too late, in my opinion (for example the difference between qi and chi, or qu and chu.) It's a decent resource for an evening class but wouldn't stand up to collegiate or even high school level requirements, especially considering that there is no intermediate level available.

I would like to see the website updated with vocabulary lists.
