About the Author
Robert J. Brym is Professor and Associate Chair (Undergraduate) of the Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He has published widely on politics and social movements in Canada, Russia, and the Middle East. His most recent books are New Society, 7th edition (2014) and Society in Question, 7th edition (2014), both published by Nelson. He has served as editor of several scholarly journals and won numerous awards for his teaching and scholarly work. Brym recently completed a project on state and collective violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the results of which were published in Social Forces, the British Journal of Sociology, and elsewhere. He is currently conducting research on the democracy movement in the Middle East and North Africa.

Ruth Montgomery, was a syndicated newspaper columnist when she began exploring psychic phenomena and attending seances. While retaining the skepticism of her trade, she kept an open mind while experiencing various occult mysteries. This book chronicles her interest in these phenomena, most particularly her experiences with automatic writing beginning in 1960. I've owned this hardcover book since the late 60'sand I will NOT part with it! It whet my appetite and set me off on an incredible journey of exploration about reincarnation and I haven't stopped since. I've re-read it every decade since! I highly recommned it as a good primer!

A Search for the Truth by Ruth Montgomery

This is one of my favorite Ruth Montgomery books. She is an award-winning, entertaining, easy to read, and engrossing author.

This book is about her beginning path in the exploration of the metaphysical world. She visited psychics of all kinds with the intention of writing a debunking article for the newspaper she worked for back then. She was well-versed as a journalist in the political arena prior to her exploration of this field and covered the terms of four presidents.

Amazingly enough, she became a convert, and from this book forward writes about different aspects of the healing world. Every book she writes is just awesome. My other favorites are Born to Heal (the story of Bill Gray) and A World Beyond (after Bill Gray dies, she channels him through the process of automatic writing. They write a book about what happens on the other side after we die.)

If you are a non-believer, this may help you understand the other "weird" people out there. Ruth does her research and checks out every fact she can when she writes.

A little remembered kick-off

There is an interesting chronology that is worth discussing here. The mid-sixties was a period later designated as the opening salvo of several waves of spiritual energy that would lead up to a quantum leap of consciousness yet to happen in the beginning of the twenty-first century, the so-called New Earth. A speed-up of time began which got an extra boost every decade.
The most visible contenders at the starting gate were Ruth Montgomery, Jane Roberts, Mark Prophet and Helen Schucman (whose ACIM work took about 10 years and was published in 1975)
A lesser known trumpet from the UK, Ruth White, was the channel for Gildas Communicates. Each of these authors brought dramatically new and fresh channeled material to public attention.
Though Gift of Prophecy was written in 1965, it was primarily a book of reporting that would convince NY publishers of the author's potential to deliver metaphysical content.
This rather neglected lesser-known Search for Truth from Ruth in 1967 is an introduction to what later developed into a rather daring and glamorous career as a metaphysical writer and channel. In this work, subtitled "A noted reporter discloses her own remarkable experiences in the field of psychic phenomena and finds a new dimension of life--and hope--for all" Ruth confides her early skepticism. She had actually written debunking material that she intended to publish, but was told by spirit not to. An interview she conducted with Arthur Fold led her to try her hand, quite successfully, at automatic writing. The rest is history, her guides have been feeding her material ever since.

After this work in 1967 came Here and Hereafter in 1968 followed by more than a dozen other popular titles spanning many metaphysical topics. Ruth had a name-recognition and credibility advantage of being a nationally syndicated columnist and was clearly the leading "New Age" author to break ground in introducing channeled material to the masses. Her material is still uplifting and of educational value to this day. Without her advance preparation the channels that followed would have had a much harder time gaining the acceptance momentum that she provided.

The current "state-of-the-art" in agriculture is defined by big agro-chemical companies dictating what the farmer must use for seed, fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides, etc. The small family farm concept has been dead in America for years. All the runoff from the big farms enters our surface water, groundwater, and oceans laden with harmful chemical that are literally killing every ecosystem on the earth (land, water, ocean, and air). With World population growth rates poised to put us at 10 Billion people by 2050, we simply do not have the amount of arable land available that it will take to feed this super population. At least not with current agricultural methods. Here enters Despommier and his troop of Grad students to show us how to think outside the box concerning an issue that will effect every one of us 7+ billion beings before we leave this Earth for parts unknown. That is having enough quality food to eat. It's hard for us Americans to sit down on our computers in our world of overabundance and contemplate that millions of kids die yearly from starvation. We think that only happens "over there, wherever there is". The truth is that it happens at home too, and in the relatively near future here is likely to become over there if we don't step up to prevent it. As our world gradually warms to levels humankind has not ever seen we will be dealing with climate changes that will rip apart our status quo agricultural systems. Imagine as our coastal cities become flooded that there is water everywhere but none fit to drink. What was until recently considered severe weather will become the norm, and new extremes will develop. If we could only slam on the breaks now and move backwards with respect to how we treat out Earth we might be able to salvage some of it. But we just keep humming along abusing our natural resources without a second thought. But wait, here is a glimmer of hope. A light at the end of the tunnel so to speak. By completely modifying how we produce our food and redefining how we use our resources to farm, we can accomplish an about face. If we can simply get the ball rolling it will snowball all by itself. I won't event try to explain how a Vertical Farm works or why it is such an amazing concept because the book does this so eloquently that my words wouldn't compare. Please just read it and think how the world would change for your kids and grand kids if we took the time and effort to make this happen. Good luck and I will see you on Level 4 of the first vertical farm (that one will be mine).

Two and a half years ago I was looking across the street and saw a Safeway supermarket with an empty roof. I thought to myself, why don't we put farms on top of buildings so that we have more local food?

Last month, I finally got to finishing Dr. Despommier's The Vertical Farm. As someone who is passionate about finding innovative solutions to environmental problems, I found this book inspiring.

First, Dr. D takes introduces some of the most important issues related to our unsustainable agriculture system. This is great for readers who might not be sustainability experts. If you are such an expert, this will be a good refresher of sustainable agriculture. The rest of the book explores the vertical farm as a concept and what role it might play in the future sustainable city. It has images of concept farms, the main systems involved, and the basics of soil-less growing techniques.

A lot of the reviews on here are critical of the author's visionary thinking and criticize the book for using "could", "would" and "should" too much.

We won't get very far in making our societies sustainable without imagining solutions for the future as this book does. Our best ideas came from imagining what might be possible.

The Vertical Farm is a great read for those looking to be inspired by a sustainable vision of future cities.

Interesting tidbits of information and step by step build up of case for vertical farms. Short on detail however, if you want to build one. Book is Appropriate for city planners and social scientists. Took one star out as some gardening content on what would be needed to make hydroponics and aquaponics feasible in such vertical farms would have been worthwhile.

A slow burn that just gets hotter and hotter until it's on FIRE!!!

As I started reading, I thought to myself, "There is NO WAY I'm going to stick around for this flirtation between a billionaire and a supermarket cook." Three minutes later, I was hooked and couldn't stop reading all the way to the unexpected cliffhanger that has me ACHING for the next book... as in, NOW, please!!!!

The relationship between Micah and Nori is like nothing I've read before. Micah is rich and good-looking. Busty blondes are like candy to him... cheap and gone quickly... until he's WRECKED by the presence of the sassy curvy chef who's totally not his usual type. She whips his usual "game" right back at him with a spicy sarcasm that only makes him want her more. The verbal sparring is delightful and hilarious with a supremely sexy undertone that only builds. And builds. And builds.

I'm not going to give it away, but it all stokes into a fire that's unstoppable and HOTTTT!!! Can't wait for Book 2.

Shelby Mitchell has outdone herself with this one! This was unique: a romance written from the male's point of view. Ingenious! Extremely well written and funny, I couldn't put the book down until I was finished. Can't wait for the next book in the series. Just bummed that it won't be out until March!
