A true comprehensive resource

This book is aimed at the practicing groundwater professional or advanced student. It is an excellent reference and review of almost any groundwater topic. Each chapter is written by an expert in the field. Each contains a well-presented discussion of key concepts and equations. The end of the chapter lists a handful of recommended references for further information followed by a comprehensive bibliography. This is your guide to the whole ground water field. If it isn't in here, you can at least find out where to find it.

A very conscientious textbook. The book covers a great deal of information including the occurrence of groundwater, groundwater flow, modeling, testing, geostatistics, solute transport, GIS, and remediation. The subject matter is complemented by tables, data, and graphs. which help explain key concepts and the mathematical equations used. I like to use this in conjunction with Handbook of Hydrology. A very good book for the practising professional.

Doesn't Get Better Than This!

I've studied piano boogie in the oral tradition for years, and found this book to be absolutely the BEST! These guys know how to break it down into comprehensible chunks. You don't have to be a skilled music reader to learn tons from this book and its accompanied audio tracks. As a veteran school teacher of 25 years, I can attest to the teachability of How to Play Boogie Woogie Piano! If you've been on the sidelines wanting to jump in and play the most enjoyable, foot-tapping piano music in the world, buy this book today!

The title, as cliched as it might seem, really does nail it. This isn't a book on how to learn some boogie woogie songs or licks, this is a book about learning how to play the style of boogie woogie piano. The basics are condensed into 8 fundamental licks complete with several variations and examples, and they're presented in the context of learning to identify by ear these basic elements in songs you want to learn which then makes it easy to recreate and adapt them to a style that is your very own. There's some great advice on practice too, which I love, as well as some historical and contextual support to help you frame your approach in a way that is relaxed and not attached to exact replication, but instead to creative and true-to-yourself expression. Very well done. The layout is intuitive and the instruction is simple and clear. This guy's obviously got some experience teaching. There are a handful of misprints that are obvious to anyone with basic music knowledge. The corrections I just saw are listed in one of the comments below by the author if you want to be sure to catch them all. This is the second boogie woogie book I've gotten since starting to learn this style earlier this year and it's hands down the better road map. For all you Sound Opinions fans out there- this is definitely a "buy it" book!

I agree with the other reviews that it's a great book for those wishing to learn how to play the blues. I'm using it to teach the basics to students. However, I'm a little bothered by some of the notation errors. It seems most music instruction books do contain 'wrong' notes, but I just started using this one and I've already found 3 errors. First on page 40 where he is showing the "Pinetop Lick" on the G chord. Show's an Fb in the lick? Then, on page 37 which shows the Rockin' Pneumonia progression they hit the turnaround with a Gmaj7? Wrong! And one more. On page 20 where they're discussing 8-bar patterns they start the Rockin' Pneumonia progression on the IV chord. Wrong again. Should be the I chord. In the comment at the bottom of that page it's said that 8-bar blues usually don't last 4 measures without a chord change. "Virtually never happens". Well, it just did in the Rockin' P illustration.

Ok, maybe it deserves 4 stars but I find this sloppy notation annoying (a programming error?). It could confuse someone who has limited knowledge of the blues (which they're trying to teach). Other than that, great book! Ok, virtually 4 stars.

A fun and simple little book packed with the wisdom of Walt Disney.

This book collects quotes from Walt Disney on a wide range of topics, including Mickey Mouse, Disneyland, movies and animation, television, education, America, business, the Walt Disney Company (known as Walt Disney Productions when Walt was still alive), animals, art & music, and other areas as well.

Many of the quotes in this book are fairly well known ("...it was all started by a mouse.", "we keep moving forward", "we call it Imagineering - the blending of creative imagination and technical know-how", etc.) as well as many that are on the more obscure side. As you read through this book, you get a sense of how Walt Disney approached his life and his work. For experienced Consultants, too

If you've already read Getting Started in Consulting, chances are you've re-read it several times and checked out some of Alan Weiss' other books. If you haven't read any of Weiss' books - and are a Consultant or are thinking about becoming a Consultant - this is a good place to start. Although this book covers some common ground with Weiss' popular "Million Dollar Consulting", there's enough unique information in each to warrant reading both.
The book starts out auspiciously in "Chapter 1 Establishing Goals and Expectations: You Will Be What You Decide to Be, Nothing Less, Nothing More". To support this thesis, Weiss points out that despite experts' warnings about much hard work and travel a consultant must endure for a maximum of a $300K income, he runs a 7-figure practice from his house with no staff or office. "The problem is that if you educate yourself incorrectly at the onset, you're vulnerable to successfully meeting the exact wrong set of expectations." - Written like a true consultant.
The first order of business is to manage your financial situation - be prepared for a slow first year.
He presents the Ten Traits - "ideal consultant behaviors and attributes as they apply to a solo practitioner, based on my observations of success and failure over 27 years.... If you have a reasonable chance of performing well in these 10 areas, you've got an excellent shot at making it as a consultant. Eight out of 10 might do it. Less than that and you may be setting yourself up..."

In finding the right buyer, don't get stuck with the gatekeeper. A number of very useful techniques are presented to identify and get past the gatekeeper, among them the simple test "If you and I reach agreement today, can we shake hands and begin tomorrow?"
Closing the Sale actually begins much earlier than you would think. By the time the proposal is presented, the sale should have already been made. The relationship building process provides the foundation for the "conceptual agreement on outcomes"; the proposal is just a formality to acknowledge that agreement.
Weiss explains why your proposal should be simple with no "legalese" and short (2-3 pages).
The key to a high-dollar practice is using a win-win pricing model where the client participates in establishing the value to the organization of what the consultant will provide.
Although the section "Forty Ways to Increase Your Fees" is very enticing, it's generally 40 tips to support the results-based approach, although a number of the suggestions could be used to increase the contract amount by expanding the scope/results..
In the latter part of the book keys top maintaining a successful practice are presented along with ways to achieve passive income which can in some cases lead to more active income business.

The best startup guide there is

I have been preparing to walk away from a six-figure job and launch a consulting practice for almost a year, and during that time I read every book I could find on that profession. Not that I believe that reading a book is all one needs to do to qualify; rather, it would be foolish not to perform as much research as possible before taking the plunge.
Alan Weiss' books offer the most practical, best-written and truly valuable advice I've found. And this one is the most wide ranging for kicking off a new full-time practice.
And I suspect that like most works that run counter to conventional wisdom, the majority of readers will not perform the necessary "background" marketing activities, will not make their proposals the logical culmination of a collaborative sales process, and will not base their fees on demonstrated value rather than billable time. All the better for those of us who do.
I followed Alan Weiss' guidelines and donated a nine-hour training program to a major non-profit group -- which will not only help some people who desperately need it, but also put me in front of a formidable board of directors for some potentially significant engagements.
Win-win, anybody?

There are much better books out there

I'm astounded that this book has sold so well, it's really not that helpful. From the whole book i would say there were 10 pages that were somehow of use to me. It's also not very specific to starting a consulting business, it was more about simply 'starting a business'. A lot of the information i found very patronizing, for example and entire chapter dedicated to what office equipment you may need including printers / fax machines / telephone etc - if you need to read a book to know you are going to need that kind of equipment you really should not be getting into the consultancy business - or any business for that matter. You may be tempted having read other reviews on this to still plump for a copy, i would advise first going to Mr Weiss' website and watching a few of his videos posted there, you'll quickly get an idea of how inane and pointless the information in the book is. That said, Mr Weiss is clearly successful in some capacity, but i'm absolutely convinced that his path to that success has no place in modern consulting methods and practice. The profile pictures he recommends for example are completely off track, his profile picture is a very cringey and cheesy snap of him resting on his Bentley - need i say more? One thing i would give Mr Weiss 5 stars for is simply selling himself, he's done a wonderful job of promoting absolutely nothing. I would strongly recommend going for another book such as 'Flawless consulting' - it really is much more useful for start-up consultants - unless of course you didn't realise you would need a phone to operate your business.

About the Author
Stanley R. Crouch is Professor Emeritus at Michigan State University. He received his undergraduate and M.S. degrees from Stanford University and his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the University of Illinois. He is the recipient of the 2001 American Chemical Society Division of Analytical Chemistry Award in Chemical Instrumentation and the 1996 ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry Award for Excellence in Teaching.

F. James Holler is a Professor of Chemistry and recipient of the Alumni Association Great Teacher Award at the University of Kentucky. He received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University. In addition to his role as co-author of several best-selling texts, he is co-creator of the world-famous Periodic Table of Comic Books.

Super-Helpful supplemental text

Awesome. This book is VERY helpful for analytical chem. It's written as a supplement to Skoog's Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry, so it refers to that text, but really, I've learned alot about Excel just from this book. Want to make a groovy looking titration curve? Consult this easy to read, "cookbook" for using Excel to compile the data. Yup, it has been a lifesaver. That and the solution manual. Don't skrimp, this book is worth it.

Invaluable research tool

Anyone who collects old 78s knows how frustratingly difficult it can sometimes be to learn about the musicians responsible for making the recordings. This book spotlights dozens of acoustic-era (1890s-1920s) recording stars, in most cases providing the most complete and detailed biographies I've found anywhere. The introduction is particularly helpful, providing an overview of the recording industry in its early years, examining how recording limitations dictated what and who was recorded, offering glimpses into the studios where these records were made, and a valuable note about estimations of record sales. This introduction nicely balances the individual accounts that come after and helps us see how these musicians fit in the "overall picture." If you've got moldy stacks of old 78s by Arthur Fields, Irving Kaufman, Ada Jones, The Sannon Quartet, Joseph C. Smith, or others like that, you might just find yourself cleaning them off and playing them again after reading this book. I find these old acoustics are much easier to enjoy once I know something about the people who made them.

This isn't a sit-down-and-read-like-a-novel book, it's more like an encyclopedia, with 1-10 page articles about individual musicians and groups. At times, the articles feel a bit "choppy," but on the whole they are quite readable and there's plenty of information. Unfortunately, the binding of this paperback version is rather poor (the sheets are just glued directly to the flimsy spine, not sewn together), maybe the hardcover version is better bound? So far, my paperback is still intact, but for how much longer, I can only guess. This is a book I pull off the shelf often to answer many of the questions that come up when I listen to my 78s. Gracyk and Hoffman will give you a whole new appreciation for these old records! Highly recommended!

High rating, but beware...

...this book is definitely for the obsessive. These are pioneers who, for the most part, predate the concepts of stardom. Early recording companies, like early movie studios, were not interested in sharing any revenue with any "stars" that required promotion -- yes, Sarah Bernhardt made a movie or two, and Caruso sold a lot of records, but they were exceptions -- people who had reputations built outside the new mediums. For this reason, you'll find a lack of big-name stars. What you will find is a wealth of information on the practically unknown legions of men and women who were among the first to actually record the sounds and songs from the last two centuries. I found it fascinating, and of value in the obsessive cataloging that often goes hand-in-hand with the hobby of record collecting. It also helped to make a great many names a lot more human to me, and I'm thankful to the author for that. Not for the average reader, but if you have an interest in the acoustic recordings of popular music from the earliest days... well, you'll be as happy as Jones & Hare.

Nice reference work for collectors of early popular music

This is a well written biographical dictionary of the key popular (vs. classical) performers featured on early recordings. For example, you can look up "Edison Quartette" and find out that it was also known as the Hayden Quartet and exchanged performers with the American Quartet. Then you can look up the individual singers. I just consulted it this morning to find out about an early recording of John Philip Sousa's band.

While it is not a discography, it has information about selected early records, along with a song index. If you want to get a peek at the style, check out Tim Gracyk's site online.

I don't see how any collector of early popular records could live without this book.

More than Half an Hour Here

Remember the show about nothing? The main character was a comedian, there was a couple of "unusual" male friends, one of whom was "on the make" and a female friend. Thinking Seinfeld? Well no. Think Hancock's Half Hour, originally a hugely successful radio series and then an equally successful TV series back in the 1950's.

Galton and Simpson provided the scripts and Tony Hancock delivered them to perfection. This is an excellent biography of the comedian who yearned to be taken seriously. Fortunately some of his most magnificent work is available on CD and DVD and John Fisher does a very good job highlighting the successes as well as dealing with the complexities of a man that wanted to be so much more.

Unlike Hancock's great hero Sid Field we have a lasting memory of the man in this work.

Hancock and the human condition - both funny and sad

Tony Hancock, at his peak in the 1950s, made one third of the British population laugh. He did it, not by telling jokes or delivering the smutty double-entendre, but by finding humour in the clash between the common person's dreams for a better life and the serial disappointment of those dreams. John Fisher's biography of Hancock analyses the man, his artistic persona, and the essence of his comedy that had made Hancock Britain's most-loved comic.

Born in 1924 to a semi-professional music hall family, Hancock got hooked early on the thrill of making people laugh. He served his apprenticeship in provincial variety clubs and radio where his aptitude for the comedy of character brought him to the attention of the BBC and two of the best comedy scriptwriters in the business, Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, who combined to produce his greatest achievement, Hancock's Half Hour, on radio and TV from 1954 to 1961.

Hancock's skill with interpretation, timing, delivery, vocal inflection, body gesture and facial expression captured every nuance of Galton and Simpson's scripts, and, with one of those chemically perfect support casts (Sid James, Hattie Jacques, Bill Kerr and Kenneth Williams), turned their fictional home at 23 Railway Cuttings, East Cheam, into everyone's site for the mugging of aspirations by reality.

East Cheam was a shabby south London suburb, struggling with poverty and rationing after the war, and a rebuttal to the Tory Prime Minister, Harold MacMillan's, catch-cry of `You never had it so good'. Anthony Aloysius St John Hancock (Hancock's radio and screen persona) aspired to the good life but was doomed by his lowly class. The added pomposity and pretensions of his character made for a doubly humorous fall without ever losing his identification with all those who knew through bleak experience that life is not as it should be.

Hancock could make humour literally out of nothing (such as the boring Sunday afternoon), extracting comedy out of the "dreary minutiae of humdrum existence". Hancock, and Galton and Simpson, were admirers of the American humourists, James Thurber and Robert Benchley, who were masters of this brand of humour. Walter Mitty, the fictional subject of a famous Thurber short story, also inspired the daydreams of heroism, excitement and adventure in the fantasies of Hancock, yearning for something better than grimy suburbia or a lonely Earls Court bed-sit.

It is not a cliché to say that Hancock suffered for his art. He sought perfection and was plagued by self-doubt, not helped by a life-long struggle with learning his lines. Every night on TV (or stage) was like a first night and he would usually be physically sick.

This core anxiety soon intensified, as, seeking new directions and international film recognition, Hancock moved on from Galton and Simpson and the BBC. This began, however, a seven year slide in his career, feeding his self-doubt and insecurity as his ratings plummeted, overtaken by, amongst others, Galton and Simpson's new vehicle, Steptoe and Son.

Alcohol was Hancock's recourse but this only served to destroy his technical comedic gifts. In his private life, he became violent towards his women partners, and suffered psychotic episodes and mood swings. Clinical depression, vodka and barbiturates provided the lethal combination for Hancock's suicide in Sydney in June 1968, aged just 44 - "things seem to go too wrong too many times", said his suicide note. It is ironic that Hancock, whose character made life bearable for so many others, was unable to save himself in the end.

The rise and fall of Hancock is exhaustively told by Fisher but he is rather less voluble on one of the main reasons for Hancock's achievements, for Hancock described himself as a socialist (this gets one sentence in a 627 page biography) as Galton and Simpson also called themselves socialists (this is only hinted at by Fisher in describing Galton as a "pen-pusher" at the Transport and General Workers Union).

The socialist politics of Hancock, Galton and Simpson gave them a genuine sympathy for the lives of the Hancock public with their disappointments and antagonism to those who stood in the way of fulfilment. Hancock was also a fervent atheist and strong sceptic of war (he had lost his elder brother in World War 11), and his disillusion with the self-feeding hypocrisies of war and religion helped to make the rationalist and pacifist, Bertrand Russell, his most admired philosopher.

Hancock identified, and personified, the "two basic ingredients of good comedy" - it should be "both funny and sad". Hancock knew that to laugh at the human condition you had first to be able to cry at it if the point, as the socialist Hancock also knew, was to change it.

A little wordy, but lots of information

Like it overall...a bit wordy at times, and it assumes a knowledge of pre-1970 british show business. However, lots of information and substance.
