WHY SEVEN?

Imagine putting together a committee whose purpose it is to write a book about the oceans around us, their history, and how our lives are affected by them. We would probably need a geologist, a mythology expert, a historian, a marine biologist, a physicist, a Biblical Scholar and his counterpart, an expert on Darwin's theories, an astronomer, a marine engineer, a seer or two, and last but not least, an explorer. Amazingly enough, Peter Freuchen is a sort of one man committee who fulfills all of these requirements and incorporates all of these viewpoints into his BOOK OF THE SEVEN SEAS.
Freuchen devotes chapters to a wide range of ocean related subjects such as the geological history of the earth from the time it was a flaming ball until it became the planet we inhabit today, then on to all aspects of the ocean ranging from currents to tides to to winds to the animals and plants that call the oceans home, ad infinitumn. Other chapters address the history of seafaring from rafts and sailing ships to submarines, discussions about great voyages from the early explorers to the Kon Tiki, great sea battles, and mysteries, mythology and marvels of the sea.
One discussion that I found particularly interesting revolved around the idea of the "seven seas." In reality, in Freuchen's own words, "there are at least seven times seven seas (or alternately) only one." The term was first used by ancient mariners of the Mediterranean world who knew only seven large bodies of water which they thought were the seven seas of the world. They also thought that the world was mostly land, between 85 and 90% in fact.
With the coming of the age of exploration, it was discovered that the ancients had made a rather serious error. There was a lot more water than had been thought, and many new seas were discovered. Because of these explorations and discoveries, the term "seven seas" was dropped and largely forgotten for several centuries. Then, in 1896, along came Rudyard Kipling. In looking for a title for one of his works, he rediscovered the term and incorporated it into his title.
In Freuchen's terms, "(Kipling) was a great man, and a popular man, (so) the world had to make his words good." To do this the geographers figured out a way to divide the ocean into seven parts. Again, according to Freuchen, it isn't a very good way, but we can get along with it "even if few of us can remember what the seven are."
For information purposes, the ancient and modern lists follow:
Ancient: Mediterranean, Red, China, West African, East African, Indian Ocean, and Persian Gulf.
Modern: Arctic, Antarctic, North Atlantic, South Atlantic, North Pacific, South Pacific, and Indian.
To summarize, and again quoting Freuchen: "The whole thing is a triumph of poetry over reality."
Freuchen's books have gone out of print and, in my estimation, that's a shame. All are worth reading both for the learning experience and for pure enjoyment.

Book of the Seven Seas

I am Danish, and I grew up reading Peter Freuchen's books and tales about the man. Anyone who has read his books knows that he had a rather lose understanding of what truth means, in other words, he was not free from embellish facts a bit, and that was one of his qualities that has endeared him to so many over the years. That been said, the man had a wealth of knowledge and I would guess most people would learn something from this book. It is easy reading because he did not attempt, or did not possess the skills, to make this book into more than a light factual work about wind, weather, currents, famous sailors and navigators, ships and a lot more. Personally, I learned a lot about the currents and how they affect not only the weather, but also our lives. I can strongly recommend this book.

Disappointing

I am an avid Radclyffe fan. I have all of her books and a collection of over 400 lesbian novels. This book was very disappointing because it had a very weak plot, not much character development and a rushed feeling to the story. In most Radclyffe fiction she builds the characters and the storyline slowly to draw you in. This one lacked substance and I felt as if someone else wrote it. Her stories seem to be getting shorter with each book published. As I said in my title - Disappointing. I would skip this one and spend your money on another Radclyffe selection. She has so many better ones.

Not up to par

I've read all of Radclyffe's novels, and Firestorm was definitely lackluster in comparison. The plot was extremely weak, the characters not terribly well developed, and, though there was sexual tension, the sex scenes fell far short of what I've come to expect from Radclyffe. For a book entitled "Firestorm," this one didn't deliver much fire on several levels.

"Firestorm" is the second book in Radyclyffe's First Responder series.

30-year-old Mallory "Ice" James is the captain of a smokejumper crew and about to train a new group of rookies. A year ago, she lost two of her people in a fire and she's determined to keep control this year. Under no circumstances does she want to have even friendly feelings for another firefighter.

Her well-ordered life is interrupted when a new rookie is transferred without her knowledge.

Jac Russo is the daughter of a senator and determined to prove herself.

When they meet, there's an instant attraction, but not necessarily an instant liking of each other.

Technically, the book is well-written - good editing and the head hopping is so controlled that it's not annoying. But I didn't feel close to any of the characters. The ending felt rushed, for example, the situation with Jac's father was never resolved.

I also expected to have them fight a fire and Mallory overcoming her self-doubts after losing two of her men - but it didn't happen.

If you have never read one of Radclyffe's books before, I suggest you read "Safe Harbor" or "Turn Back Time," not "Firestorm."

Doesn't get any better than this.....

One reviewer knocked this book for lack of color photos, "very" home-made look, 19th century approach, and requiring many hours of work, all true, and all total irrelevant, showing a total lack or understanding of the "spirit" of Gingery's books. Gingery's in his series and in the Lathe book, take you through many time honored, and nearly lost techniques of metal working. Just think of what you will learn, foundry work, metal casting, scrapping, drilling, machining. You actually can build a Lathe that is just as accurate as any comercial lathe on the market, it is (if properly built) a precision Lathe (.001) that you have made yourself. In fact the lathe will help to build itself, the only machine that can do that. If you are a very good scrounger you could make this for next to nothing. Sure you could go out and buy a small Mini-lathe, but then think of all the things you could learn by making it yourself. Not to mention, any accessory you can dream of, you can make yourself. My lathe is about 2/3 done, and I've learned more than I thought possible. Gingery's books are small and well written, very curt and to the point, but complete. All you need to know is there. Read carefully, he does not make a big deal of some of the most important parts, so skip a sentence and you'll miss a lot....

Step by step Divid Gingery helps you build a lathe!

Step by step Mr.Gingery makes you feel you can do this, in fact it is the most compleat "build a lathe book" I have ever read (yes theres more than one). There is a lot of casting involved so get the first book (the charcoal foundry) as they build on each other. The book is fairly simply writen and well illistrated.

Dave's books are fantastic. I have built the charcoal foundry, lathe, milling machine and electric furnace, and had a great time doing it. These books will teach you the common sense approach to metalworking and inspire you to do much more than you thought possible in the home shop.

Don't waste your time

Having gone through all six tapes. I have to admit if your already to the business of becoming successful or are even slightly successful YOU WILL HAVE (a) figured all this out before (b) have read it somewhere else. I don't understand the fuss about Earl he really is only taking most of his ideas (as do most 'success' writers have) from Nepoleon Hill And for Earl to say 'that NH only taught him one thing and the rest of it was usless - look who's talking...Very dispointed save your money - what he has to teach in the six cassete series he could have done in six second speech....

Severely Abridged

The Strangest Secret for Succeeding in the World Today is a valuable CD / tape course that I've listened to often (having borrowed it from the public library), and I was looking forward to adding this title to my personal reference collection. Unfortunately, this book - with the same title as the audio course, and denoted as being the "Deluxe Edition" no less, seems to contain about 10% (maybe less) of the audio program content. From this perspective, this tiny volume is a big disappointment.

I was presented with this information while on a business trip, and I can tell you, it honestly changed my life. Why so dramatic, well, I was one of those people who became conformed like many others. Watching other(s) on TV fulfil their endeavors and letting the boat PASS ME BY. Wake up, and think, what have I done truly different to acheive any growth since 2 yrs ago, now I know what needs to be done. I thank Earl for the wake up call.

About the Author

Fenwick W. English (Ph.D.) is the R. Wendell Eaves Senior Distinguished Professor of Educational Leadership in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a position he has held since 2001. As a scholar/practitioner he has held positions as a school principal and superintendent of schools in California and New York and as a department chair, dean, and vice-chancellor of academic affairs at universities in Ohio and Indiana. He is the former President of the University Council of Educational Administration (UCEA) and of the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration (NCPEA). His research has been reported in national and international academic forums. He edited the 2006 SAGE Encyclopedia of Educational Leadership and Administration, the 2009 SAGE Library of Educational Thought and Practice: Educational Leadership and Administration; and the 2011 SAGE Handbook of Educational Leadership (2nd Ed.). In 2013, he received the Living Legend Award from NCPEA for his lifetime contribution to the field of educational leadership.
