Excellent one-stop reference for a very complex field

The 1997 edition of the Encyclopedia of Packaging Technology is an excellent reference for anyone who works with packaging, especially for those people who have no academic or vocational training in these subjects. You will get the clearest explanations of any subject that falls under packaging. I only wish it included the original material from 1986. The 1997 edition adds to what is in 1986, but if you do not have the 1986 edition, you will be missing relevant background on the older technologies. The only packaging reference you will need unless you are trying to figure out how to actually create a package.

Good elementary review of basic packaging technology.

As a reference text, this book is a good beginning for anyone not totally familiar with the packaging industry. Hence it can be used as a starting point to begin further detailed investigation into specific subjects. Probably not worth the $200+ price, as it will mostly sit on your shelf as a reference text. Better information could be obtained from other sources or via the library.

In addition to The World’s Religions: Worldviews and Contemporary Ethical Issues (3rd edition, 2009) he is co-author (with Christian Hauer) of the widely-adopted textbook An Introduction to the Bible: A Journey into Three Worlds (Prentice Hall, 7th edition, 2008) and author of Quest for Harmony: Native American Spiritual Traditions (Hackett Press, 2006). During a thirty-five year teaching career, he has introduced generations of students to the world’s religions and taught a wide variety of special topic courses ranging from Religion and Politics to Spiritual Ecology: Religion and Nature.

Cornell George Hopley-Woolrich (4 December 1903 – 25 September 1968) is one of America's best crime and noir writers who sometimes wrote under the pseudonyms William Irish and George Hopley. He's often compared to other celebrated crime writers of his day, Dashiell Hammett, Erle Stanley Gardner and Raymond Chandler.

He attended New York's Columbia University but left school in 1926 without graduating when his first novel, "Cover Charge", was published. "Cover Charge" was one of six of his novels that he credits as inspired by the work of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Woolrich soon turned to pulp and detective fiction, often published under his pseudonyms. His best known story today is his 1942 "It Had to Be Murder" for the simple reason that it was adapted into the 1954 Alfred Hitchcock movie "Rear Window"starring James Stewart and Grace Kelly. It was remade as a television film by Christopher Reeve in 1998.

old fashioned mystery story

This is a fun read that typifies the stories that filled the pulp mystery magazines and digests of the 1940s and 1950s. The story pulls the reader in immediately--why would three men all commit suicide while staying in the same hotel room on different occasions? The hero is a hotel detective who reads pulp magazines and battles all kinds of obstacles to learn the truth behind the suicides in room 913.

Cornell Woolrich was one of the top suspense writers of the era and penned the story on which the movie "Rear Window" was based. Mystery in Room 913 is one of his best stories and it really holds up well after fifty years or so. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a short, entertaining read to pass the time.

Lean and Entertaining

This fantastic tale spun so deftly and entertainingly by the great Cornel Woolrich in the mid-1930s, even before he had worked his way so deeply into his craft — and compulsion — that only Chandler, Gardner, Hammett and Cain could be mentioned in the same breath, almost makes me a bit sad. The reason? Because I can rest assured that at some point, a modern day reader will post a comment here such as: “Okay, but very old-fashioned and doesn’t read well,” or worse, “Well-told, I suppose but much shorter than I’d like.” At that point I will want to scream: “That’s because you’re used to bloated and inconsequential book fare and wouldn’t recognize a brilliant little piece of fiction if it began walking and came up to bite you in the rear end.”

Mystery in Room 913 is a near perfect little mystery/suspense story. Woolrich wrote it lean, telling a story, as all the truly great ones did. Yet despite the brevity of the tale, which is in the seventy-page ballpark, you get a clear impression of the characters from the moment you meet them, an atmosphere for the setting, and a deep curiosity for what’s behind it all which keeps you turning the page.

The main character is the hotel detective, Striker, who is first on the scene when Room 913 claims its first victim. A brief, unsigned note allows the brash and none too eager city detective to write it off as suicide, but Striker believes the man’s fall from 913 was murder. A year later, a second man suffers the same fate, through the same window, and again a brief and unsigned note allows the same city detective to write it off as suicide, and save himself some work. Striker knows better, and others in the hotel begin to suspect something out of the ordinary is going on in room 913.

Why can you feel a depression in 913? Why does a dog who never whines do so only moments before one of the victims plunges to his death? What about the devil-mask Striker discovers in a tenant’s room? What of the smell of sandalwood? And what to make of the lightning someone claims to have seen at the exact same moment one of the men met his fate? The victims are always single check-ins, never a couple. Striker, frustrated that the copper won’t look into it any further, knows it is only a matter of time before room 913 strikes again.

Some investigation, and a ruse is perpetrated by Striker in order to prevent another “suicide” but the best laid plans don’t always work. Striker’s obsession to know the truth about room 913 leads to an exciting climax and solution. Set during the mid-thirties and written then, the story has the feel of watching a 1930s black and white mystery, a nifty little “B” perhaps, tightly written and quickly paced so not an inch of celluloid is wasted. Economically written yet not without atmosphere, the solution is fun and suspenseful. It is no more, nor less plausible than many great mysteries (Christie’s Death in Mesopotamia, for example).

Woolrich wrote a barrel full of great short stories — most famously the noir stories where everyone was doomed. Some became films in the 1940s — Black Angel, Phantom Lady. Hitchcock’s Rear Window in the 1950s is based on Woolrich’s It Had to Be Murder. This one goes further back, however, when he was writing mystery and romance, and is more an entertaining mystery than a noir tale. Great stuff if you enjoy a lean and entertaining style of writing. If you’re a fan of Woolrich, a must read novelette.

The universal suffering of war

These dispatches from 2012 remind us that while war is waged collectively, on whole populations, suffering is on an individual level, felt by each and every person. In this respect, this book is as much about all war as it is the civil war in Syria.Torture,death, maiming, injury are parts of all wars, but the suffering visits each one by one, and is endured individually. Identities are destroyed by war, which this book so graphically illustrates. The writer's accomplishment here that she has made this so clear.

I've been involved in humanitarian and human rights work for decades, and worked with torture victims from the Bosnian war. However, the graphic descriptions of torture here are harrowing and difficult to read, and the suffering of the victims difficult to comprehend. Torture can be justified for any reason in the minds of those who use it. This is made clear by the comments of the perpetrators here. In this respect as well, this book is about the use of torture throughout history; the motives are the same, the victims dehumanized, their suffering justified. It winds together the human capacity to justify torture, and war, and to rationalized its use: from early human history to the Nazis to the Khmer Rouge to the Russian gulags to our own country's use by the Bush administration, its use is always justified in the minds of the torturers.

Also, in this and other ways, this book shows how the fabric of society--the collective experience of whole populations--breaks down and becomes fragmented in war. Like in Bosnia, these Syrian people who once identified as "Syrian" broke down into smaller tribes and factions. War destroys commonalities and can make neighbors and relatives enemies.

Last, what further makes this such a painful read is that the Syrian war is ongoing--still going strong and mercilessly. For those who are surviving through it, their suffering continues day after day, by each and every one.

Dear Janine Di Giovanni- congratulations on your book ' The Morning They Came For Us'. I finished it in one sitting, unable to stop turning the pages. It is the ONLY book where I have read ALL the materials after the end- the epilogue and the chilling appendices. Your ability to see both beauty and brutality in the setting of mankind's worst inhumanity is remarkable. As a physician I was especially touched by the plight of doctor's whether tending to the civilian victims or the instruments of the regime. As a writer I was moved by your suffering bearing witness to the unbearable. As a woman without children I was deeply affected by how children touched you- their feeble slippers 'on icy mud' and their 'purple toes', their silent eyes, their protests at leaving for the bread queue, their astonishment at being shot at my young soldiers or finding themselves seat belted next to a murdered sibling. As a MUSLIM, I am heartbroken to know the detail of such suffering of MUSLIMS at the hands of MUSLIMS in such gruesome and evocative testimony. As a naturalized American and as a native born British citizen I am most sickened by our inaction in the face of what I accurately or inaccurately perceive as genocide which is approaching unthinkable dimensions at a rapid velocity. This I find to be the greatest inhumanity of all - the disregard and indifference of the elite world which now harbors such animus towards MUSLIMS that only Christian refugees are welcomed by political populism in the West that only Yazidis elicit the empathy every displaced dismembered and decimated Syrian family deserves. And this apart the incredible disregard for full MILLIONS of displaced and dispossessed. I feel, and deeply sense in the public dismantling of Syria, we are witnessing our own dismemberment as the human race, our own descent into civilizational decay and our own inexorable advance to a new and escalating global decline which we have authored by our very own hand. Your words, your experiences are invaluable but I understand come at a devastating price for you and your family. We are indebted to you for your courage and heart and fortitudes. Pretty Intense Book!!!

I am not finished with it yet but it is pretty intense so far. Somewhat disturbing in parts but that is what it is all about. Gives you a good feel for what is really happening in the middle east for the western folks who haven't got a clue.

About the Author

Maya W. Tyler received her BS in information systems from Virginia State University and completed English and writing courses at the University of Connecticut. While she works as a cybersecurity analyst, Tyler also enjoys writing poetry, children’s fiction, and motivational nonfiction.

She currently lives in Maryland with her two brilliant boys, who are the inspiration for her upcoming children’s book series.

Not your typical self help book

Maya gives her readers a raw and honest book about dealing with grief. Thankfully, she doesn't paint a utopian picture of if you just follow my advice, you will be happy again. Instead she gives us a fly on the wall view of her journey from unbearable grief to bouncing back better. She is honest about the setbacks she experienced after starting her journey to her "better" self making her relatable to her readers. For me that made using her strategies to bounce back better seem more viable because her readers don't have to feel like failures if they backslide for a moment.

This is a total MUST READ!! Once you start you reading, you seriously become glued and never put it down. I also didn't expect to be encouraged to participate in motivating activities, so that was an excellent surprise! Whether you have experienced great loss or not, its immediately captivating by being so easy to relate to!! I felt like the author was literally giving me the real secret behind "brushing off and trying again" with confidence, which also made it easy to become connected, intrigued and empowered. I have read this book at least twice already, huge THANK YOU to Author Maya W Tyler , looking forward to whats next

Raw and Relatable

I have a short attention span and I get bored with things very easily. So when I say that this book kept my interest with every page, it's saying a lot. I don't normally read self help books because most are super corny and non relatable. But this was one was raw, down to earth, and refreshingly different. I only wish that it would have come out six years ago when I was severely struggling with self love and self doubt and was in desperate need of healing. Very good book.
