This is not an easy read. I keep it around so I can dive back in on occasion, I haven't gotten interested in it enough to read the whole damn thing yet, TBH.... I like some of Pynchon's other novels, the more accessible stuff - Crying of Lot 49, Inherent Vice (which was made into a pretty decent PTA film..).

I'll re-rate this book if I ever actually finish it :)

Through the Looking Glass

Gravity's Rainbow is a dynamic piece of literature. It provides the reader with kaleidoscopic ever-shifting perspectives and may send one into any number of alternate states of consciousness at any given time. With a myriad of characters, Thomas Pynchon grabs us by the back of our head and forces us to examine just about everything, even the scary bits of life. The book is elaborate, dense, hilarious, tragic, paranoid, poetic, philosophical, non-linear, historic, technical, powerful, and illuminating. Gravity's Rainbow spins a web across time and space until the fabric of the universe starts to fold in on itself, eventually crashing down to earth in an explosion sure enough to send one of us to either heaven or hell. Think of the Large Hadron Collider and the smashing of atoms. Think.

Great book, the gold standard intro

This book is a very finely crafted comprehensive introduction to pharmacokinetics, with enough pharmacodynamics to give one context. If you are new to PK/PD and need to understand and work with the subject matter this is an EXCELLENT starting point and a fine reference. The prose is clear, the organization thoughtful, and the figures and diagrams are masterful - best in class. The authors are both renowned academics with extensive industrial experience. That background shines through in the thoughtful way that topics are motivated and explained. I found the questions useful and thought-provoking. Isn't it the case that the more iron one pumps in the gym, the stronger one is on the playing field?
One thing that I would add to this book (and most other PK books I've seen) would be a comprehensive listing of the different math models (one or two compartment, IV, or zero or first order input, etc), highlighting different uses (closed form solutions are easiest to use for parameter estimations, ODE formulations for repeat dosing, etc.) and their different parameterizations. This book contains some of this information (e.g. Table 19-1), but an appendix with this info would be useful. An additional improvement with great teaching utility might be an elementary modeling/estimation program for MS-Excel.
For those needing an overview of PK (e.g. a pharma executive responsible for a development program) without a lot of the details necessary for practitioners, a less-comprehensive book that is also very good is Peter Welling's "Pharmacokinetics". Gabriellson's and Weiner's book "PK and PD Data Analysis" has a more spotty overview of the basic subject matter, but does have descriptions of many techniques not found elsewhere. The latter book is "WinNonLin-centric" (WinNonLin is a program written by one of the authors) which may be what is wanted.
My favorite intro book and basic referencer for PK is definitely Rowland and Tozer. Bravo!

Best reference on PK

This excellent book (1980 edition) was my introduction to this topic. I have it in my bookshelf and I keep referring back to it. Without planning it, I've become the resident PK expert in my department thanks to this reference! Thank you Drs. Rowland and Tozer.

The Bible of Pharmcokinetics

"Clinical Pharmacokinetics: Concepts and Applications" (or better known as Rowland and Tozer) is a book filled with deep concepts and good explanations. It is the Bible of Pharmacokinetics. If there is a PK concept you want to look up, this book will be the first place you look for it. Before giving the review, let me introduce my background. I have a formal education in physical chemistry and analytical chemistry and am currently working in the field of pharma. I have currently read through half of this book. Although I have not completely finishing the book, I believe there is enough information to share.

The previous PK book I read was Concepts In Clinical Pharmacokinetics by Joseph T. Dipiro and it is a shorter and simpler book than Rowland and Tozer. While "Concepts In Clinical Pharmacokinetics" was a delight to read, it is on the simpler side and a lot of concepts are left unexplained. When I was reading it, there were often moment of "How did he get from this to that?" or "Where this comes from?", and I had to stop reading and tried to derive the equations. In contrast, Rowland and Tozer explain the principles of PK in great details and often from multiple angles, so that the readers can fully appreciate how the concepts are linked together, how PK theories apply and how PK impacts pharmacology research and the drug discovery. The exercises are challenging, but not impossible. Well, a few of them are nearly impossible, but most of them can be worked out (even for someone of my background).

I would love to give it a 4.5 stars, but that is not an option. I do see there are a few shortcomings in this book. Although it is very detailed, it can be too detailed for beginners, except for students who has more time. It is best to start off with a short and easy to read introductory book. Yes, Rowland and Tozer have explained many concepts in multiple ways and this is generally good, except when you are busy. Sometime, I just feel like: I get your point already. The Final and the real criticism is that the book can be a bit dry. Unlike "Concepts In Clinical Pharmacokinetics", this is not a book to be breezed through.

Study Materials

I bought this book for use as study materials for the geriatric specialty credentials. It was a nice price, cheaper than the other usual place that sells it, and it was the most up to date version. Informative and useful. It does not have plentiful graphs/tables/charts, and it is in black and white. I would have preferred more charts. Each chapter has its own list of references. Complete with index.

I gave this book a 3 start because it is filled with relevant information regarding LTC nutritional standards of care. However, if you are buying this book to get CEP, as someone wrote under another review, be aware that the book does not include the test or the option to reclaim CPEs. I guess one had to buy a separate test from another website that selll just the test for more money that the book itself!

Great book at less then half the price of other ones I've found. I got a great deal on the 30 credit test that goes with the book from another company thar wanted $149.00 for the book. Don't think you could get 30 credits cheaper any place else.

Born in London and educated in Watford, Brian qualified as a teacher and taught mathematics and drafting for 14 years before being ordained for the ministry. After four years of service in the UK he became a missionary in Africa, serving six years in Zimbabwe, one in Zambia and 13 in Liberia.

Church planting amidst civil war

When Brian and Dorothy Knightley were sent to take over leadership of the Salvation Army mission in Liberia in 1991, they were stepping into the middle of a civil war that still had many years to run. Their story is told in this book by Brian. The Salvation Army had first started work in the country some three years previously, and by the time the Knightleys left in 2004 numerous churches had been planted and several schools started.

While the Salvation Army is best known to outsiders for its work amongst the poor, this story is mainly about evangelism and church planting. There are some negative connotations to the "army" metaphor in a country where various rebel armies are fighting for dominance, but such problems were reduced when people came to understand what the Salvation Army stood for. It is interesting to observe how traditional Salvation Army outreach techniques - playing brass instruments, attracting a crowd, preaching outdoors - succeeded in the Liberian context.

The "business as usual" approach to church planting taken by the Knightleys whilst dodging rebel bullets seems extraordinary. They did have to evacuate in 1996 when rebel president Charles Taylor's men were systematically looting every house in their street and killing the inhabitants, although not before telephoning Charles Taylor and speaking to the man himself. Even after this horrific event, they could not wait to return and get on with the work.

The author is not a professional writer, but the book is not difficult to read. Although many may be attracted to read it because of the extraordinary circumstances occurring in Liberia, its true value lies in its description of a successful church planting movement.

Cedric Gemy

Cedric Gemy is a french freelance graphic designer and training advisor (or should i say edult educator, i don' t see the difference) who lives in Rennes but travelling a lot to teach Scribus, Gimp and Inkscape. He works with those softwares since around 2003. Besides is this freelance activities, he also teach communication design in some french universities and private schools. He is an active member of Scribus and Inskcape team, involved in the user interface refactoring project of the first and in the documentation of the last. He is a creator of French Free Graphic Designer Association (AFGRAL) and FLOSSMANUALS Francophon. This is his 5th book for he already wrote two about Gimp, one published under GPL licence, one about Inskcape and one in french about Scribus.

A great tutorial for Scribus

There are really two manuals currently available for Scribus, not counting Scribus Kompakt that is available only in German. The first was Scribus, the Official Manual by Gregory Pittman, Christoph Schäfer, et al. (ISBN 978-0-9560780-0-1). At around $45 it is a bit expensive, although profits go to further the development of Scribus, so when I bought it six months ago I didn't mind paying the price. The book here by Cédric Gémy is the second, published in December, 2010. I have been through both manuals thoroughly. Both are worth having if you're serious about desktop publishing with Scribus, although each serves a somewhat different function and approaches the subject differently.
Gémy's book is less expensive, especially if you buy the e-book format (downloadable in EPUB and PDF formats, available only at the publisher's website for around $25). Lest you think that you should buy the Pittman and Schäfer book so as to contribute to the Scribus project, Cédric Gémy is a frequent contributor to Scribus and has spent a lot of time helping with its development. I don't have any problem if his bank account increases a bit for his efforts.
Gémy teaches you how to use Scribus in a more or less tutorial fashion, where each chapter progresses in difficulty. In that respect it is less of a reference book than the Pittman and Schäfer manual. In fact, Gémy's book doesn't even have an index. On the other hand, if you are a beginner, a tutorial is exactly what you need. And Gémy does an excellent job of taking you by the hand, showing you how to do something step by step. He even includes quizzes at the end of each chapter. You can literally start at the beginning of the book and have Scribus pretty well mastered by the time you get to the end. "Beginner's Guide" is an apt title for Gémy's book.
Another advantage of Gémy's book is that it targets 1.3.5, where the Pittman and Schäfer book is written for 1.3.3.14. If you're not familiar with Scribus version numbers, 1.3.3.14 is the official stable version as of this writing (December, 2010), and the development version when Gémy's book was written was 1.3.5. The development version is currently at 1.3.9 and will become the new stable version at 1.4.0, due out in early 2011. Therefore, Gémy's book covers the new features you will find in the version you are probably going to use.
There are also advantages to the Pittman and Schäfer manual. For one thing, not being written in tutorial fashion it's easier to look up how to use a specific feature. More importantly, Pittman and Schäfer include a lot of things about desktop publishing that are not specific to Scribus. For example, do you know the difference between a spot color and process color, or the advantages and disadvantages of TIFF files over PSD files? Pittman and Schäfer not only tell you about a Scribus feature, but why it was included.
I never attended a brick and mortar school to learn about desktop publishing, but for the past 15 years I have been a charter student at the school of expensive mistakes. I started with PageMaker 4.0 and QuarkXPress 3.1 and have been using layout applications to produce student textbooks ever since. But even though Gémy's book is aimed at beginners, I found several helpful hints in it.
Today my favorite layout application is Scribus, not that its commercial competitors don't have a few more features (they do), but being in the open source world my documents are not hostage to forced expensive updates. If you have a substantial knowledge of desktop publishing, buy Gémy's book to get a quick introduction to Scribus. If you know nothing about desktop publishing, buy both.

A delicous feast of Scribus knowledge

The latest Scribus book - Scribus 1.3.5 Beginner's Guide by Cedric Gemy published by Packt Publishing is a delicious feast of Scribus knowledge for both beginner and intermediate user alike. I approached the book with open expectations and it did not disappoint. An interested person who would spend few days on going through the book from the beginning to the end would find themselves quite knowledgeable about the document layout process from the beginning to the end. Moreover, they would get a lot of useful information with the hands-on experience to go with it on both the basics and some finer points of font handling, color management, PDF output, preparing a document for professional printing, and working with the PDF forms and JavaScript scripting.

The book covers a lot of ground, but every chapter nicely builds on the previously introduced knowledge and its internal logical structure to increase the reader's knowledge without overwhelming them. When important concepts are introduced they are emphasized and when they are reused gentle reminders point the readers to the wider earlier exposition. Almost every concept is followed by some practical experience. This helps the reader solidify their mastery of the material being learned. Throughout the book the main goal of the author seems to be to help the reader to learn how to use the program most effectively to free them to be creative. At ever possible opportunity multiple approaches to accomplish an action are presented from the most coarse to the most precise with standard keyboard shortcuts at the end serving as a cake topping. Sometimes the advice goes a bit too far for a beginner's book suggesting that a user fire up the fontforge to add numeric glyphs to a font if their other options available to them are not satisfactory, but those instances are rare enough to be glossed over.

The style of writing feels like that of Alexandre Dumas, pere - colorful and engrossing, yet sometimes very cultural. For instance, "Have a go Hero" slogan used for the mini-exercises at the end of sections sound reminiscing of "One for all and all for one" and seems to me to be uniquely French. This brings me to my gripe about this otherwise excellent book - it just reads like a high school student's translation from a French original. The result looks like a hurried and at times literal translation effort, which causes the mind of an English reader to pause and figure out what exactly is being said time and again. Moreover, there are places where the translators (as I think Cedric wouldn't have missed something like that in the original text) have unintentionally introduced some potential traps for the unwary reader. For instance, in the "Changing font" section of Chapter 5 it says "Avoiding good fonts ensures as little trouble as possible" even though the author's likely intent was to express the opposite sentiment as the following sentences show. Whatever the reason for poor translation and underwhelming editorial effort, if someone can get over the lingual shortcomings of the book they'd be left with an excellent source of Scribus knowledge and that's what matters in the end.

Just one more thing. I didn't have a paper copy for this review. The PDF Packt sent me looked alright, but the ePub - my preferred format for enjoyable reading on a 6" Sony PRS-600 ebook I used for reading for this review - wasn't prepared nearly as well. Considering the fact that more and more people are switching from the dead tree format to eInk ebooks Packt could really get ahead of other publishers by putting more effort into preparation of the ePub files. As it is the ePub formatting looked amateurish. The images were perhaps the same ones used for the PDF as they were too small for the ePub and nearly impossible to read. Many informational inserts were broken over the page end. Every numbered list had double columns of numbers, which really should have been caught in the proofreading. Most hyperlinks ran out of the pages on any zoom level but the lowest and the Latex code ran out of the pages at every zoom level. However, in the end it was nice to have any kind of ePub, so thanks for the effort Packt!

just for layout

Imagine, a program that specialises to just doing layout?! At first this might seem overkill; too much of an [unnecessary?] niche perhaps. Yet the book persuasively shows that there is a need for, at least, free software that focuses on layout and does it well.

Gemy forthrightly points out at the start of the book what the functional perimeter of Scribus is. Specifically, you should use a dedicated word processor like Microsoft Office/Word, or OpenOffice Writer, to actually write and spell check any text that you want to put into a PDF document that will have multiple pages and graphics on those pages. Scribus does not attempt to impinge on this text ability. Also, if you need to have photos in those graphics, and you need to do touching up or other enhancements, then use Photoshop or some other equivalent package. And if you need to draw an image, consider using Adobe Illustrator or something similar. It is the integration of drawn images, photos and text into a cohesive layout that is Scribus' remit.

That being said, Scribus can certainly handle many low level useful manipulations that are also handled by those other packages. For example, kerning, which is the altering of white space between letters, can be manipulated explicitly under Scribus. This is useful for the hopefully rare occasions when you need to optimise the appearance of some text under display. Likewise, Scribus can access all the fonts defined under the operating system. Attention has been paid to transparent font management, which eases the explicit burden on you.

The questions ['pop quiz'] at the end of most chapters is a little different from the typical Packt book. It is as though Gemy is trying to imitate an actual 'teaching' text that is used to accompany some college computing class. Not a bad idea. But the questions seem too short and simple. They don't really challenge the reader much, except in the most cursory sense. Better perhaps might have been to have more questions and a gradation of difficulty, to give a serious reader something solid to tackle.

Now consider the translation effort from the original French. True, there are a few awkward turns of phrase. But overall the meaning is quite clear. The translation is well done.

Photographer Mars Vilaubi chronicled the adventures of his three backyard hens from their first days out of the egg through their first days laying eggs in Chick Days. He lives in western Massachusetts.

Best Beekeeping Book for Beginners

This is the book I wish existed when I started beekeeping in 2008. Loaded with photos and step-by-step instructions, it's one of the few books that will help you survive your first year, especially if you don't have a mentor. As the co-chair of the Albuquerque beekeepers group (400 strong) for the past 3 years, here's why I think beginner beeks will be especially well-supported by the approach in this book.

PROS:

- STEP-BY-STEP instructions are included for a variety of beginner tasks like installing a package, lighting a smoker, and conducting your first hive check. Seasoned beekeepers often forget how scary these first steps can be.

- PHOTOS, PHOTOS, PHOTOS! Everything from eggs and larvae to wax festooning to varroa mites to Nasonov fanning gets a gorgeous photo. I can't emphasize enough the importance of visual learning when it comes to beekeeping.

- A PERSONAL STORYLINE. This book follows the author's experience keeping backyard bees with her family. The good the bad and the ugly details are all included, making for a very forgiving and human narrative.

- INTERVIEWS WITH LOCAL BEEKS. Backyard beekeepers from San Francisco to Austin to Chicago are highlighted throughout the book. (I'm on page 47.) The sheer variety of beekeepers presented makes a new beek feel comfortable developing their own unique approach.

- A NATURAL APPROACH. Most books I used in my first year were very chemical-centric and solely devoted to Langstroth hives. This book primarily covers Langstroth hives but also discusses top bar hives and pays more than just lip-service to a chemical-free approach.

THIS BOOK HAS IT ALL!!!!!!!!!

Let me pre-face my review by saying I don't normally write reviews, but, here goes.
I had to on this one, because, this book has been wonderfully enjoyed by me and my two kids for many reasons.
It is a wonderfully written, informative how to book that takes you through something as daunting to myself as bee-keeping and it has opened up a whole new world of fun possibilities for me and my two kids! Seriously!
I bought the book on a whim, for many reasons, one, I like collecting books on crafting, do-it-your self projects, you name it, and.... I always have this goal of farm to table adventures, and bee-keeping is for me the top.... a secret wish that I never thought I'd actually be able to do.
Then arrives this book!
Firstly, it is really well-written. Not one of those how to books you just thumb through and mark pages...it has great stories about people doing small hives and showing you how you can too! I love that, it is very personal, and you instantly feel part of a fun community. It is easy to understand, and keeps you engaged with facts and everything you need to know-isms without being pretentious, dull, or repetitive. My daughter did a science project on honey bees and how important they are to our eco-system, and she was excited that that information was in there, too, a long with so much more we didn't know. We read the whole book together in just a couple of days, and have started our own plan! We are REALLY EXCITED!!
There are a lot of really great photos, and the photos are just beautiful, it is such a picturesque book, and I can't say enough of how the book is just really, really cute, and pretty, I love all the artwork and the layout of the pages, and the way the sections and chapters are organized, it is wonderful to remember it all, it flows really nicely.... It was really fun reading with my kids, and we are excited about starting our own hive this spring, it's really fun to think of all that is possible and involved with bee-keeping, who knew? You have to get this book and find out!!! I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in something to read about with their kids, or who loves crafts, hobbys, gardening, and, of course bees!
I will definitely be looking for more books from this author!

In 1947 Edward R. Dewey and Edwin F. Dakin published their book Cycles: The Science of Prediction which argued the United States economy was driven by four cycles of different length. Dewey devoted his life to the study of cycles, claiming that "everything that has been studied has been found to have cycles present." He carried out extensive studies of cyclicity in economic, geological, biological, sociology, physical sciences and other disciplines. Short and insightful

Cycles is a book from the youth of modern statistics. The field was young, and progress was rapid. You can taste the optimism. The regular abuse of statistics was still in the future, and calculations were simple because you had to do them by hand. Wonderful new applications were just lying about, awaiting an intrepid analyst to make use of them. So, someone applied statistics in a new way to the world of economics. Dewey and Dakin wished to be able to more accurately predict the growth of whole nations, and the businesses within them. The authors were attempting to add rigor to the field of political economics, regarding it as hitherto little better than a voodoo science.

The debt of the authors to those whose names, equations, and graphs line the pages of this book -- and to many others unnamed -- is without end. Theirs is the pioneering work that is moving economics out of the blind alley where it stood for many years, so that it can take its rank as a true science. Cycles p. xii

Cycles is primarily about sigmoidal growth curves and the application of Fourier analysis to time-series data, with examples chosen primarily from economics. That is a pretty terse characterization, so let me unpack it.

Sigmoidal or logistic growth curves were first suggested by Pierre Verhulst in 1838 to describe the growth of any population of living organisms. The sigmoidal function has a characteristic 's' shape that describes how a population starts off slowly, then grows quickly, then slows its rate of growth until it reaches the maximum carrying capacity of its environment.

From animal populations, it was a short leap to applying the logistic curve to human populations. There are some very interesting graphs in the book. One I especially liked was the sigmoidal fit to the population of the United States, with a predicted equilibrium population of 200 million or so. [p. 15] Dewey and Dakin wanted to extend the ecological discovery of the logistic curve into the world of business. Using sales or production data, Dewey and Dakin tried to systematize the business cycle by analogizing a business to an organism. The sales or production data were plotted as time-series, and then a logistic curve was fit to the data. This works extremely well, and a plethora of examples are given in the book. One of the more interesting graphs is created by plotting a generic logistic curve, and then placing an industry on the curve in the place where the slopes [rate of growth] match, thus creating a simple visual representation of the 'age' of an industry. This actually works pretty well, with television far down at the 'young' end of the spectrum, oil in the middle, and horse buggies at the 'old' end. [p. 49]

Looking at the rate of growth, rather than absolute growth, is key to Dewey and Dakin's method. By doing so, one can more clearly see changes in the curve than with absolute numbers, especially if the scale gets very large. This is easily done by means of a semi-log or ratio plot. When one does so, it becomes clear that the rate of growth is continually decreasing until it approaches zero.

Time-series data are any kind of data plotted against time. This could be the aforementioned population growth curve, or stock prices, or even the tides. Most anything can be turned into a time-series simply by graphing the data in the order they were collected.

Fourier analysis is the the really fun one of the lot. Joseph Fourier discovered that most any repeating pattern could be created by the addition of a number of sine and cosine functions using the superposition principle. This can be used on phenomena like sound waves to break them down into a collection of pure tones. One can then recreate the original sound by combining the pure tones. This techinique is very useful for waves of all types, but it turns out to have more general applications.

Next come the eponymous cycles. A great deal of the book is devoted to analyzing cycles that can be observed in nature and business, with periods of 54, 18, 9, and 3.5 years. Various phenomena are related to these cycles. For example, the 18 year cycle is identified as the real estate cycle in the United States. Common stocks are said to rise and fall with a rhythm of 9 years, while industrial production moves in 3.5 year waves. The data presented here is certainly intriguing, but I remain skeptical. It would be an interesting exercise to see whether the cycles have continued for the last 60 years since the book was updated.

At least part of the reason I am skeptical about the cycles is the use of moving averages, which are one of a class of statistical tools known as 'smoothers'. Smoothers are very dangerous statistically, because their use before analysis can result in inflated R^2 and p-values. Smoothers work well for visualization however, and that is their primary use in Cycles. Dewey and Dakin did not compute any statistics for their cycles, probably because the mathematics was too tedious at the time. This is now more readily possible, but the same computer power makes it possible to diagnose the failures of smoothers by means of Monte Carlo analysis.

With the general growth curve and the cycles covered individually, Dewey and Dakin then show how to combine them, cycles riding on trends. This is probably the most interesting part of the book. It is analogous to learning to think in three dimensions instead of two. It is relatively easy to imagine a trend or a cycle continuing as they have before, but to put them together is really interesting. Even more so when you have several different cycles all together. This is where Fourier analysis can be really helpful, but allowing you to isolate different cycles from a mass of data.

Once this is done, we can attempt to apply all this knowledge. The ultimate goal is to discern whether an up or downtick in business is temporary or permanent. Business strategy is very different between weathering a dry spell and preparing for a long downward slide. Dewey and Dakin went so far as to predict in the first edition of their work that American business would experience a temporary downturn immediately after the Second World War, but that business would pick up afterward and a new era of prosperity would follow. In this, they disagreed with the majority of economists at the time, who reasoned that the war had cured the Depression, but that with the war over the Depression would return, and millions of returning GIs would find as little work as they had when the war started.

Dewey and Dakin turned out to be right, which is why this book is interesting. It was reissued in 1950 with a postscript containing additional data to bolster the claims of the original volume. I surmise that the book has had some influence, because rate of growth has since become a key business indicator, so much so that businesses dread a decrease in the growth rate, even if profits are healthy. Growth just has to slow down, not even stop, for a company's stock to plunge in value. This leads to the pursuit of growth at any cost, the attempt to start a new logistic curve instead of simply riding out the current one.

An interesting case study of this is the Wilkinson Sword Company. You may never have heard of them, because they stopped making swords in large quantities long ago, and stopped making swords entirely by 2005. What they have made since are things like beach furniture and lawn mowers, been bought and sold multiple times, and today they make the Schick Quattro. A fine consumer product, to be sure, but you cannot buy their excellent swords any longer. This is a lot to lay on Dewey and Dakin, but this is what immediately came to mind.

This book also occasioned a burst of massive skepticism on my part. Chapter II presents a series of logistic curves fit to the populations of various nations. The curve fits reasonably well in all cases, which means that birth rates tend towards equilibrium all on their own. A modern truism is that increasing education and standards of living lead to a decrease in the birthrate. However, it rather seems that birthrates would be trending down regardless, because that is just what they do after an initial burst of procreation. All the curves in this book predate any kind of emancipation of women or effective birth control, so clearly something else was at play. I do not know that increasing education and decreasing birthrate are unrelated, but on reflection I do not know that anyone has ever shown them to be related either. It simply fits the grand metanarrative of Western modernity, and so correlation is more than sufficient in most eyes.

This was a very interesting book, well worth a quick read, for it is blessedly short. The graphs in particular are beautifully done, well scaled, not too busy. Dewey and Dakin also take up some interesting asides, including the question of whether scientific innovation is slowing down [p. 218], and the metahistory of Spengler as applied to Chinese dynastic cycles [p. 201]. However, this book is much less dense, and more readable than most of the more advanced tomes that have addressed the same subjects, and that is a worthy accomplishment.

Harmonics of Economic Cycles

This book was written in the 1940s, out of a study commissioned by Herbert Hoover, designed to find out the cause of the Great Depression. I actually found this book after it was quoted in other publications. The information Dewey and Dakin discovered is timeless and incredibly interesting. Some of the correlations will blow you away.

The bottom line is that there are definite cycles of varying lengths, which affect all business, growth, the stock market, weather, etc. This should come as no surprise, since our solar system and the universe are built upon harmonics, which are nothing more than overlapping wave cycles. They were not looking for the "why" booms and busts occurred; their focus was on the "when."

What is interesting is that I extrapolated their cycles to the present time period, and our current recession/depression fits in perfectly with the cycle lows of the 54 year, 9 year and 18.3 year cycles. According to their work, the bottom for the real estate cycle would have hit around September 2007. That got my attention.

Even though the book is mathematically oriented, it is very easy to understand for someone without a background in economics or math. The fact that this book was published in 1947 is actually a positive, because we can now look back and see how valid their information really is!
