Interesting project

The idea behind the book is very good, because one can get a fast introduction to the subject. It is also suited for someone like me, lacking good mathematical skills, to remember many topics. On the other hand, some mistakes are left for the reader to find, and this is not fair for an undergraduate. A very good improvement would be made if answers to problems were provided.One more thing about it: if someone like Sommerfeld himself provided hints for solutions of his books` problems, why can't this book do the same?

In this well-researched, scholarly study, Major traces the roots of Washington's Panama Canal policy deep into the 19th century, with emphasis on the rivalry between the U.S. and Britain over the proposed isthmian waterway. The author, who teaches history at the University of Hull in England, describes how the U.S. gained treaty rights to build, maintain and fortify the canal and explains how the canal affected Panamanian politics and economics. Built between 1904 and 1914, the canal performed a dual role as a thoroughfare for maritime commerce and a conduit for seapower. Major argues that the canal more than justified itself in both categories throughout WW II but lost its strategic and economic importance in the postwar years. In a later section of the study he charts the U.S. government's decision to transfer canal authority to Panama via treaties signed in 1977 during the Carter administration. Those treaties stipulated that in 1979 the Canal Zone, created three quarters of a century earlier, would cease to exist.

British scholar Major has examined a wealth of U.S. government documents bearing on American involvement in Panama and the Canal Zone, from Theodore Roosevelt to Jimmy Carter. Unlike such previous scholars as David McCullough, who have concentrated on how the United States acquired the rights in 1903 to build an isthmian canal, Major focuses on the subsequent history of the Canal Zone. His concern is how the United States administered the zone, governed its people, and intervened in Panamanian politics for more than seven decades. Despite its considerable achievement, Major's work will not supplant Walter LaFeber's The Panama Canal: The Crisis in Historical Perspective (1978; LJ 10/15/89. rev. ed.), which should also be consulted. Recommended for academic libraries.

More Heat - Less light on an Old Story

This is a good albeit flawed study. It is well-researched but some will question its conclusions, the direct ones and the subtle ones. The footnotes are good and reflect careful research. The index is comprehensive and useful. Nonetheless, this book errs on being unduly critical of the U. S. role and administration. One is hard pressed to find a less imperialistic nation than the United States. Look at the French, Belgium, English, Japanese, etc. imperial examples.

Specifically the book covers the years from 1904, when Panama with help from the U. S. separated from Colombia in November 1903, to 1979. The book also includes some useful information dating back several hundred years. The author points out that many European countries wanted access to the Isthmus of Panana, only fifty miles wide in some sections, for trade and imperialistic reasons. England, France, Spain and other European countries wanted to build and control a canal to unite the two oceans. It took the boisterous Theodore Roosevelt to do it. His actions have been widely condemned or praised by countless historians.

It is well to remember that had TR not acted, and I am not an apologist for him, Panama would have remained a neglected province of Colombia. Remember as well that Panama, along with four other Latin American nations, joined Gran Colombia voluntarily in the 1820s. It was quickly ignored and scorned by Colombia for the next 80 years. To wit: there were over 80 up risings, attempts at achieveing independence, against Colombia during those years. They were not happy campers and yes, they were ignored by the government in Bogota. Cognizant of European ambitions on Panama, one far thinking senator suggested that Colombia move its capital to Panama City to guarantee its continued sovernity over the Isthmus. It never happened and the senator lost his seat.

In an attempt to keep Europe at bay, Colombia signed a series of understandings with the U.S. to guarantee their hegemony over Panama. The U. S. even intervened or threatened to do so several times when Panama tried to establish their independence from Colombia. The U.S. wasn't pure either, it wanted to eventually build a canal in the region. Plus the Monroe Doctrince was still in full force. Colombia's experience highlights the danger of seeking a powerful protector -- they may take you over.

The book has five major themes. "The canal's defense and its place in America's strategy, the Zone's regimental system of government, its strictly segregated labour force, its commercial development at the expense of Panama, and the equally controversial issue of U.S. government intervention in Panamanian Politics."

Clearly, the author has a very biased and erroneous point of view. Too bad for it weakens his book and negates all the serious research he did. He should have been more balanced.

Panama's Right to Self-Rule

During the US-Panama formation of bilateral foreign policy making, John Major researches a book that gives much attention to how the two nations came into co-existence and the great difficulties that followed. It was greatly unfortunate that "political semantics" took another form of how the US wish to maintain dominion over Panamanian politics. All political actors could not ignore the realities that at some point even political semantics and political theater runs its course. In particular and especially an event that changed the course of US-Panamanian politics. On January 9, 1964, flag riots in Panama made President Lyndon B. Johnson initiate and respond to taking political steps to how the future of US-Panama and US-Panama Canal would take shape. Panamanians were tired of Colombian exploitation for about 80 years (1821-1903) and even US domination from 1903-1999. It takes time for human beings to finally ask and raise the question, "Is this right and ethical, if not, why do we continue to do it?" It was time for Panama to have its own sovereignty without outside interference. Colombians can cry that Panama was a Colombian territory, which is a complete fabrication. Their interest were in the Panama Railroad and all the money Bogota would accumulate at the expense of all Panamanians. They took 90% of the money and left Panama with about 10%. They wanted the Panama Canal but when the French abandoned the project, they did nothing to complete it. All Panama wanted was to be free from Colombia, once and for all, permanently.

I gave it 3 stars because the information is useful to people wanting to know the basics about thoroughbred ...

I've seen this information before. It's based upon statistics of 27 parameters which give percentages of over 7000+ races. It only makes sense that higher than normal percentages will put you closer to a possible outcome. Many of these being "chalk" horses. It then gives 18 rules to follow when making a final decision which includes races to stay away from. I gave it 3 stars because the information is useful to people wanting to know the basics about thoroughbred racing. But the outcome isn't "written in stone" even though the author believes one can make a good living off of his concepts. Makes for a good read and may improve one's handicapping prowless.

One of the Christian discipline is to Pray, it connect you with the Lord and it keep your relationship with him intimate. Unfortunately, it one of the hard one, and you do not find teachers that teach you this discipline with such a deep passion, that got you involve and provoke in you the desire to Pray, but this awesome teacher has this skill, I know is not her but she let the Holy ghost to used her to put together is amazing book and how to start praying. For me this is the best book about prayer that I have read.

Horrors!

It's been said (I think by Mark Twain) that a joke is like a frog. You can dissect it to see how it works, but it will lose its life in the process. Is the horror film also like a frog? For Peter Hutchings, the answer is almost. His analysis of horror film - appropriately titled The Horror Film - offers a lot of insight into the genre but doesn't kill enjoyment of it in the process.

Hutchings starts off showing that it is difficult to even define what a horror film is. The term really only came into use in the 1930s with the original Universal monster movies, including Dracula, Frankenstein and The Mummy. Of course, in hindsight, it is easy to see possible horror movies from the silent era, including The Phantom of the Opera, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and The Golem. Is the existence of the supernatural a requirement? If so, what about movies like Psycho or Jaws? As Hutchings illustrates, even a rather clear-cut genre like the western is not easy to define; horror is even harder.

Subsequent chapters in The Horror Film look at various elements in the horror film, such as the nature of monsters, the psychology of horror, the use of sound in horror and the differences between "classic" horror and "modern horror" (the latter roughly categorized as beginning with Rosemary's Baby and Night of the Living Dead, when "good" was less likely to triumph). Hutchings introduces us to the theories of other writers as well. Some consider the horror film as statements on race or class or gender differences, and while Hutchings gives such views their due, he also is clear that at times, overanalysis is done.

Hutchings is both critical of the horror genre and affectionate towards it. This is not the easiest of reads and is seemingly designed for students of film more than the lay reader (such as myself). That is not to say that others won't get anything out of this, but this is not a quick page-turner. If you are a fan of horror movies and have the patience for this book, you are likely to get something out of it. The Horror Film will allow you to appreciate these movies in a new light.

Excellent Introductory Text for Horror Analysis

This was for my Horror and Sci-Fi Film Analysis class, and I found it to be an appropriate overview of critically analyzing major films in the Horror Classics as well as the Modern. The author did a good job explaining in detail elements of what characterizes the horror genre, how culture plays a role in influencing the symbolism that pervades classic horror films, and the increased use of violent and sexual images in modern "slasher" films.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed reading this informative book. I read this along with "The Monster Show," and I have to say that this book contained much more information about how to analyze the horror genre. Although the pace is slower and the writing somewhat scholarly, the author's passion for film shines through. I feel like I got to know him by the end of the book. If you are looking for an introduction to analyzing horror films, I would read this. If you are looking for an introduction to the history of horror films, I would read, "The Monster Show." Together, they complete a well rounded study of the horror film.

Great intro neuro book.

This is a great intro neuroscience book.

I bought it to help give me some background when I joined a neuroscience lab as an undergrad. I have never taken a pure neuroscience class so this book helped tremendously in building my foundation for more advanced topics.

This book is not exhaustive by any means and is heading towards the out-of-date side given of the advancements in the field to date. Probably great for an undergrad or beginning grad student.

A self-contained introductory book in neurobiology.

Clearly superior to most of its competitors, this book will serve as a basic introductory text for medical students, as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate students in the biomedical sciences.
Shepherd does a wonderful job in explaining core concepts in neuroscience, ranging from the cell, to brain systems, to behavior.
Many of the chapters, especially in molecular and cellular neurobiology, will clarify certain 'dark' concepts, essential not only for neuroscience, but for physiology, pharmacology and immunology as well.
This should be one of the standard texts for every student interested in the nervous system, and in integrative science in general.

About the Author

Gavin Bowden is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgeon at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre NHS Trust and the John Radcliffe Hospital, a position held since 2000. His main clinical interests are spine and hip surgery especially the management of degenerative disorders, deformity and tumours of the spine. His major research interest is the design of implants for minimally invasive spinal surgery and basic science interests include the physiology of the growing spine. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Oxford where he is a Fellow of Worcester College. Gavin graduated in Medicine in 1986 from the University of the Witwatersrand and was awarded the Gencor Prize. He then specialised in Orthopaedic Surgery in Cape Town. In 1995 he was awarded the Synthes Prize by the University of Cape Town and the Edelstein Medal (awarded to the outstanding candidate in the Orthopaedic Fellowship Examination) by the College of Surgeons of South Africa. Martin McNally is a full time consultant specialising in limb reconstruction. He leads a specialist team, which runs the only dedicated Bone Infection Unit in the UK. He has a special interest in limb injury, particularly non-union and malunion fractures. Martin's training in trauma and orthopaedics was principally in Northern Ireland. Since 1993, he has developed specialist skills in the treatment of complex injuries, particularly infected fractures and fractures with bone loss. He holds the Martin Medal for Orthopaedic Research, The Sir Walter Mercer Gold Medal from the Intercollegiate Board of the Royal College of Surgeons and the International Society for Fracture Repair Young Investigator Award. Martin has a strong interest and record in teaching and research. He holds the Degree of Doctor of Medicine and is Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Orthopaedic Surgery at Oxford University. He is Head of Surgery at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre.
Simon Thomas is a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Bristol Royal Children's Hospital and Honorary Consultant at the Royal United Hospital, Bath, positions he has held since late 2007. His main clinical interests are developmental hip dysplasia, limb deformity and sports injuries in children. His major research interest is the use of systemic and intraosseus bisphosphonate for avascular necrosis of the femoral head in children and adolescents. He graduated in Medicine in 1992 from the University of the Cambridge and did clinical training at Barts, qualifying in 1995. He specialised in Orthopaedic Surgery in Oxford (2000-2005). In 2005/6 he undertook 12 months advanced clinical training at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto. He has undertaken further fellowship training in Oxford (limb reconstruction) and Perth, Australia (adolescent sports medicine). Alex Gibson was educated in Canterbury, then studied medicine at Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School in London, qualifying MB BS in 1996. After pre-registration jobs, his basic surgical training was on the St. Mary's rotation and orthopaedic specialist training in Oxford. He has also had periods of advanced fellowship training in Spinal surgery in Oxford, Auckland and Brisbane. He was appointed Consultant Spinal Surgeon at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore in 2009.

Sweet story about love and trust.
